Vonage Review

We’ve Been Using Vonage Now for about 9 months in our office, and I thought it would be a good time to share our experiences, from sign-up to now.

Signing Up

When we first signed up with Vonage, the cost was $24.99 a month + an activation fee. I’m not really sure why there was an activation fee, but after doing a little bit of research, I found out that by calling and placing the order over the phone as opposed to online, the fee could be waived. So we ended up just paying shipping charges (around $11 perhaps?) to have the VOIP box shipped out to our office. I’m sure if you look around the web there are Vonage Deals available, if not call them and waive the activation fee.

Setting Up

Setting up the box was relatively easy - plug it into the router, plug in a phone jack, and it works. I seem to recall having some minor hiccups in the beginning, but since then everything has been great.

Management + Control Panel

Probably the think we like the best about Vonage is the web based control panel. You can change your location for E911 purposes, add on additional lines so friends can call you at a local rate, enable offline/call forwarding if your internet goes down, and change your billing information. The interface is slick and easy to understand and makes using Vonage really easy.

Gripes

Gripe #1: The price is $24.99, but since the FCC treats Vonage like any other phone company, it comes out to $30 after all the various communication and telephone taxes. I’m sure this was probably in the fine print, but it still irks me a bit.

Gripe #2: Sometimes people who have caller id blocking can’t get through to us, and I haven’t found a way to turn this off yet.

Over All

We’re very happy with Vonage. It’s definitely helped us increase our overall business productivity when we travel overseas, and it’s pretty much been worth every penny. Very rarely are there dropped calls, and sound quality is what you would expect from a normal land line.

Calling Overseas, especially India, used to be very expensive. Nowadays, you do not even need to own a telephone line to call overseas - you just need a calling card to call overseas. You can even call from a payphone.

We took a look at a few calling cards and saw that the rates were very attractive:

Another strong offering for Indian Calling Cards is CallingCards.com. While the prices are slightly higher (starting at .05/minute to India), the cards have no connection fee and can be rechargeable. You can see a list of their cards here.

There are a lot of options to call India and we think the two services above have great rates and something for everybody - we highly recommend you take a look and decide which calling card best suits your needs.
